Children

Childcare in the Netherlands is for children from 0 up to and including 4 years old. To find out which child care centre is near to your home or just to know where they all are in Tilburg you can go to the cityhall.

Pre school play groups

This kind of education is for children from 2 up to and including 4 years old, this is an option if you do not want your child in day care for a full day. Usually these pre-schools have half day sessions, about 3 to 4 hours, with a minimum of 2 days a week.
The payment for pre-schools is based on your monthly salary and is subsidized by the government.

Pre-schools are especially for people who want to prepare their children for primary school and have them socialize with other children. The language used at pre-schools is Dutch, it depends on the teacher if there is the possibility of speaking English.

Primary school

Primary school in the Netherlands is divided in 2 categories, grades 1 and 2 and 3 to 8.
Grades 1 and 2 are for children from 3 to 6 years. This is a preperation to the rest of primary school which starts with grade 3.
Grade 3 to 8 is for children from 5 to 12 years old, the language spoken in these schools is Dutch.

At these schools the main language is English, these schools are pre-eminently for children from expats

Afterschool programmes

After school programmes are designed for children from 4 to 12 years old. These programmes aim to have a relaxing and fun environment for children after school. These after school programmes are open during the school term and some are also available during school holidays.

Secondary education

Secondary education for children in the Netherlands is for children aged 12 to 18. The age at which they have finished this depends on the level they attend their secondary education. Some schools offer bilingual education, but this is only on the higher levels like VWO.
